 MVP trophy |
At a press conference in Kaunas, Lithuania to mark the awarding of
the regular season MVP trophy, Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu on
Thursday praised this year's deserving recipient, Zalgiris center
Arvydas Sabonis, as one of the best European players ever. Sabonis,
the center of attention as Zalgiris hosts Maccabi Tel Aviv in
Kaunas tonight, returned home to Kaunas this season after 14
years abroad in Spain and the NBA. "Sabonis is giving basketball
back everything that basketball has given him, and he is doing it
in the best possible way: with the youth and his people, in his own
country." Bertomeu said, making reference to the Sabonis Basketbal
School, where almost 700 kids are currently enrolled, and also to
Sabonis's effort to build a new arena for the city of Kaunas.
Bertomeu also made reference to the interesting fact that "in a
recent study we made in the Euroleague about the visitors of our
web page, during January and February, Lithuania leads all the
rankings". He also thanked also another Lithuanian club, Lietuvos
Rytas, for its fine role in the ULEB Cup, where it reached the
quarterfinals before being eliminated this week.
