Blazers: at a glance

Why the Blazers won: They played one solid quarter -- the fourth.
Arvydas Sabonis and Steve Smith combined for 22 fourth-quarter
points on 9-of-9 shooting from the field, covering up for the
unforced turnovers, sloppy defense and selfishness on offense that
plagued the Blazers through the first three quarters. Blazers
coach Mike Dunleavy was furious after the game, saying if the
Blazers play that way three months from now, they will not survive
the first round of the playoffs. There were 12 lead changes in the
game, and the Blazers took the lead for good on the final basket
of the third quarter -- a layup by Smith that made it 59-57. The
Blazers shot 50 percent for the game (37 of 74). The Bulls shot
42.7 percent (35 of 82). The Blazers have won 11 of their last 12
at home.

Key performers: Sabonis, who missed the previous three games
because of back spasms, finished with a season-high 23 points and
had five rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. His previous season
high for points was 20 against Vancouver on Dec. 29. Smith made
seven of 10 field goals and four of four free throws to finish
with 18 points -- his 14th consecutive game in double figures. .
. . Dale Davis, starting in place of Sabonis, had 11 points and
eight rebounds and helped hold Elton Brand to two fourth-quarter
points. Ron Mercer led the Bulls with 22 points, Brand had 18 and
Brad Miller added 12.

Injury report: Blazers forward Scottie Pippen is out indefinitely
after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from
his right elbow on Monday in Birmingham, Ala. Rasheed Wallace, who
left Tuesday morning's shootaround because of illness, started and
had 14 points and seven rebounds in 37 minutes. Bonzi Wells was
dazed early in the third quarter when his nose collided with
Mercer's shoulder. Wells sat on the bench for seven minutes before
returning to the game.
