Blazers: at a glance
Why the Blazers won: Trailing 46-45 at halftime to a team that had
beaten them twice, the Blazers stepped up their defensive pressure
in the second half and registered their third consecutive come-
from-behind victory. The Clippers made 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent)
from the field in the first half but only 11 of 32 shots (34.4
percent) in the second half. . . . Arvydas Sabonis gave the Blazers
a boost off the bench, matching his season high with 23 points on
10-of-17 shooting from the field. He also had 23 points against
Chicago on Jan. 30. . . . The Blazers shot 51.9 percent (41 of 79)
and improved to 16-2 when they shoot 50 percent or better. . . .
They are 34-3 when leading after three quarters.
Key performers: Sabonis' 23 points marked only his second time in
six games in double figures. . . . Dale Davis made his third
consecutive start at center and had eight rebounds to pace the
Blazers to a 40-33 edge. . . . Damon Stoudamire, who led Portland's
starters with 17 points and nine assists, matched his season high
with four steals. . . . Guard Eric Piatkowski led the Clippers with
15 points, and center Michael Olowokandi had 13 points and eight
rebounds.
Injury report: Lamar Odom, the Clippers' leading scorer at 17.2
points a game, left in the third quarter with a bruised left hip
after scoring three points in 27 minutes and did not return. . . .
Veteran forward Detlef Schrempf, excused from practice on Wednesday
to be with his family in Seattle, did not play but said he plans to
stay with the Blazers for the remainder of the season. . . . Greg
Anthony missed his fourth consecutive game with a sore right
shoulder.
