Red-hot Blazers Outshoot Wolves

Portland, Ore. Posted 12:06 a.m. November 05, 1997 -- Kenny Anderson
scored 24 points and Arvydas Sabonis 23 as the Portland Trail Blazers
beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-105 Tuesday night in Portland.

Isaiah Rider, in his season debut after being suspended the first two
games by the NBA for his off-court troubles, scored 20 for Portland.
Rider started even though he missed Monday's practice when he claimed
he went to the wrong gym.

Brian Grant added 17 points for the Blazers. Rasheed Wallace, who
guarded Minnesota's Kevin Garnett most of the night, scored 16.

Anderson's six 3-pointers, in seven attempts, were one short of a
Portland franchise record. He also had seven assists. Sabonis had 10
rebounds and six assists, dominating Minnesota's Cherokee Parks and
Stanley Roberts.

Tom Gugliotta and Stephon Marbury scored 27 apiece for Minnesota,
playing its first road game after a 2-0 start at home. Garnett scored
18 but only two in the second half and none in the third quarter, when
Portland broke open the game.

The Blazers outscored the Timberwolves 22-5 to start the second half,
taking an 88-62 lead on Anderson's three-point play with 5:05 to play.
Minnesota didn't get its second field goal of the second half until
Roberts scored inside with 2:28 left in the third period to cut Portland's
lead to 90-67.

The Timberwolves scored 12 consecutive points at the end of the third
quarter and start of the fourth to cut the lead to 93-81 on Gugliotta's
19-footer with 9:48 left.

But Anderson came back into the game and hit a 3-pointer from the top
of the key, and the Blazers never were in serious trouble.

Anderson was 5-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half, including one
just before the halftime buzzer that put Portland up 66-57 at the break.

Sabonis scored the first six points, then had assists on the next two
Portland baskets, as the Blazers used a 16-2 run to go ahead 49-39 with
5:20 left in the first half.
