Blazers: quarter by quarter

First: There were four lead changes in the quarter -- the last coming 
on Steve Smith's layup with 17.7 seconds remaining that put the 
Blazers ahead 27-26. Dale Davis had nine points to lead the Blazers, 
who shot 52.2 percent (12 of 23). Ron Mercer had eight points for the 
Bulls, who shot 57.1 percent (12 of 21). 

Second: Chicago misfired on its first nine shots, but the Blazers 
countered with seven turnovers in the opening 6:14. After Brad Miller 
dunked to give the Bulls a 32-30 lead, the Blazers went on a 14-5 run 
to take a 44-37 lead. Mercer made two free throws to cut the Blazers' 
lead to 44-39 at halftime. 

Third: The Blazers scored the first two points, then Elton Brand led a 
10-0 run that gave the Chicago a 49-46 lead. Mercer made a 16-foot 
jumper to give the Bulls their biggest lead, 57-49, with 3:16 
remaining. The Blazers closed the quarter on a 10-0 run, regaining the 
lead, 59-57, on layup by Smith with 24 seconds to play. 

Fourth: Arvydas Sabonis scored 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the 
field and 4-of-5 shooting on free throws and had three defensive 
rebounds to lift the Blazers. Brand's 17-foot jumper pulled Chicago 
within 67-66 with 8:03 to play, but Sabonis converted a three-point 
play to spark a 19-8 run that helped send the Bulls to their 12th 
consecutive loss.
